John Sutter was a pioneer and business man who built his own fort in California. In 1847, Sutter wanted to build a sawmill. James Marsha
was the lead carpenter hired to build the sawmill on the American River. One day, Marshall was checking the water in the tailrace, a ditch that
carries water away from the water wheel. What he discovered were gold nuggets! Sutter and Marshall agreed to become partners and tried to ke
the discovery of gold a secret. But eventually, the news got out. The California Gold Rush was on.
For many, the Gold Rush was a way to get rich quick. For Sutter, it was a disaster. The people who worked for Sutter left him, hoping to fin
gold and keep it for themselves.
Thousands of people left everything they had to move to California. This became overwhelming for Sutter when fortune seekers began
camping on his land. They destroyed his crops and took his sheep and cattle. Sutter eventually lost all of his money. Even though he was one of th
first people to discover gold in California, Sutter did not profit from it. It was impossible for him to outpace the determination and will of thousand
of gold seekers.
