someone doing something nice might be utilizing poor judgment. The definition of awful
underwent the same type of metamorphosis over time. Originally, it referred to something
that was worthy of awe, but the meaning today has gone in the opposite direction. Now
awful, as you are probably aware, refers to something of appalling quality.
