This is a moth. The adult moths feed on nectar to gain strength and then reproduce, or make copies of themselves. The females choose plants they know their offspring will like to eat. Then they lay eggs on the underside of those leaves. The eggs hatch and release the larvae (called caterpillars, for both butterflies and moths). The larvae eat constantly and grow quickly. Once they reach a certain size, they drop to the ground and hide beneath the leaves. There they'll form a pupa, which has a protective case holding the organism within. A pupa is also called a chrysalis. They'll spend all winter there, going through metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is an event in the growth phase of some animals. It is a big change in the structure of the animal. Remember, birth is a big change, but it is not in the growth phase. It is not a type of metamorphosis.
