Why did the Supreme Court rule that some of FDR's New Deal programs violated the
Constitution?
The majority opinion supported by Chief Justice Charles Evan Hughes was "the
programs would cause the country to fall deeper into the Depression."
Chief Justice Charles Evan Hughes stated, "The president and his administration
want to keep the role of government too small, which is not aligned with today's
concerns."
Chief Justice Charles Evan Hughes and the rest of the court believed "the
programs were unnecessary no more since the country's economy was
improving."
The concern as said by Chief Justice Charles Evan Hughes was that FDR's
interpretation "virtually had no limit to the federal power; and for all practical
purposes we should have a completely centralized government."
