When I was a little boy my father used to tell me the story of a little boy in fictional ancient china. Back in ancient China, they used to name their firstborn sons very long names to signify the importance of being the firstborn. The boy in this particular story had a name something to the extent of Riki tiki tembo no so rembo sorry barry boo chi pip perry pembo. His younger brother's name was much shorter something like Rin. When the two boys were playing the younger brother fell into a well and was quickly rescued because of his short name. However, when the older brother found himself in the same predicament a few days later, he was not so easily rescued. It took a long time for his younger brother to convey his name to his mother and any other village people who could aid him in rescuing his older brother. My father always told me that this story serves to prove why names in China are commonly short.
