The northern shore of long Island is built of mounds of glacial till that north shore beaches are rocky with steep bluffs. The south shore is very different. Most south shore beaches are flat and sandy.

The northern ones were highly affected by the glaciars that sit on top of it. The southern ones were much less affected by that.
