A colony of bacteria is being grown in a 96 cm² area. Every 24 hours, the bacteria reproduce and covers twice the area they occupied at the previous day. If after 20 days they covered the whole area, how many days it took to cover an area of 48 cm² ?

You just said that their area doubles every day. That means that yesterday, their area was 1/2 of what it is today. For example, if they cover 12 today, then they covered 6 yesterday. . . . So, now, if they cover 96 today ... the 20th day... then they covered 48 yesterday ... the 19th day.
