During this period, Dix also suffered a very severe illness and upon recovering, he wrote many hymns, he also wrote the lyrics for “what child is this?” The lyrics for this carol were later set with tune for Greensleeves.

The lyrics of the hymns comes from a poem written by Dix and titled “the manger throne” while the portion of the poem that was used as the song lyrics are made up of three stanzas

Dix was born in England and also schooled in Bristol England. His father was a surgeon and composed the biography of poet Thomas Chatterton. His father also named his second after Chatterton to honor him.
