Christopher Columbus made his most important exploratory journey in 1492 Columbus landed on one of the Bahamas islands "discovering" the New World for Europeans. He later made trips to the Americas and claimed lands for the Spanish Empire in the Greater and Lesser Antilles, Central America, and Venezuela.
Columbus led his three ships - the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria - out of the Spanish port of Palos on August 3, 1492. His objective was to sail west until he reached Asia (the Indies) where the riches of gold, pearls and spice awaited.

I hope this helped.
