They were carried into captivity multiple times throughout history: Egypt, Babylon, Persia, and in a way Rome. (They were heavily persecuted under Caesar)
They also held/hold a belief in one God, they call Elohim or Yahweh. (belief in one God is called Monotheism) Christianity and Islam hold this view. Christianity: Jesus. And Islam: Allah. Both are supposedly related to the Hebrew old testament belief in God with Abraham.
