They wanted to have equal representation in the government, but later, when they were not allowed to assemble at the Estates-General, they went to a large Tennis Court and pledged the beginning of the revolution right there. Watch The Rose of Versailles if you're into anime at all; it should explain the French Revolution in a very entertaining way.
