Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer. He was particularly controversial due to his beliefs in heliocentrism (the fact that the sun is at the centre of the universe) and Copernicanism. He was investigated by the Roman Inquisition in 1615. He was tried by the Inquisition and forced to recant, spending the rest of his life under house arrest.

Galileo was the first to obtain actual proof of the fact that the Milky Way consisted of many stars. This came in 1610 with the help of a telescope. He speculated that the Milky Way might be a rotating body of stars, held together by gravitational force.

The invention of calculus is usually credited to Newton and Leibniz independently. Newton is also credited with the theory of universal gravitation.
