Both chloroplasts and cyanobacteria perform photosynthesis. They also share many characteristics, including an inner and outer membrane, a nucleoid, thylakoids, lipid droplets and ribosomes. These similarities lead to the suggestion chloroplasts evolved from cyanobacteria.
