Josie found an inchworm, and wanted to see how far it would travel inside a minute. She recorded the starting distance as 0, and then the distance it traveled to in one minute, which was 4 inches away from the starting point.
2. Points on -200 and 175.
Kayla wanted to see how far her toy submarine could go when she pushed it under the water. To record the depth and height, she decided that 0 on the number line would be the top of the water, and measured the distance in millimeters. When she pushed the submarine down, it went under the water 200 millimeters before she let go, and it shot up and out of the water 175 millimeters before coming back down to the water.
3. Points on -0.5 and -1.5
Skylar had two pullback toy racecars, and he wanted to know how far back he could pull each of them, measured in inches. The first one would only go back half an inch before it stopped moving, but the second one went back 1.5 inches.

Jacob was measuring the depth of the water tables in two areas, and graphing them with 0 as ground level. The water table at the first site was 6.8 miles under the surface, and the second was 2 miles under the surface.

Maurice borrowed $5 from Chris, and gave $8 to Jake. To keep track, he put on a number line the money he borrowed and the money he loaned. The money he gave away he put as negative, because he didn't have it, and the money he got he put as positive, because he had it.

Angela wanted to see how high her friend could jump before diving into the pool. She decided that the water level would be at 0, and then asked her friend to jump. Angela's friend jumped 1 foot in the air, and dove down 3 feet into the water.
7. Points at 4/5 and 3/5
Mike and Bobbi both wanted slices of a pie, but before they could have a piece, their friend wanted to record how much they took so that they would know how much was left over. The pie was sliced into fifths, and Mike and Bobbi each took one slice. The friend recorded how much was left after each of them took a piece, showing that 4/5 was left after Mike took a slice, and then only 3/5 was left after Bobbi took a slice.
