The answer is:

The Soviet invasion was likely to expand into neighboring countries.

By gaining more territory more and more nations were joining the URSS, the united states wanted to keep the URSS as it was and if it was possible to diminish it, at that time the whole world was divided in communists vs "the free world" and the URSS and the United States were the leaders of each side.

Soviet Invasion in Afghanistan was seen as a potential threat because President Jimmy Carter believed that the Soviet invasion was likely to expand into neighboring countries.

Further Explanation:-

The president of the United States, Jimmy Garter strongly objected and condemned the invasion of Soviet Union in Afghanistan and he requested Senate to postpone its action of SALT- 2 which was a treaty related to nuclear weapons and also he called back U.S official dignitaries of the United States who were there in Afghanistan back. All these actions of President Carter indicated that Russian intervention in Afghanistan had damaged the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. This relation between the two countries came to a breaking point when the Soviet Invaded Afghanistan and established a Puppet government there.

All the decisions which President Jimmy Carter made against this invasion made it clear that the United Nations was not ready to accept any intervention by the Soviets in Afghanistan. Along with that, Many trade restrictions were imposed on the Soviet Union by the US and the United States also boycotted the summer Olympics in the year 1980 which were due to take place in Moscow.
