At the time of the Irish Potato Famine, Ireland was part of Great Britain which was called the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. However, since the famine disproportionately affected Ireland and one million deaths were accounted for it, as well as mass immigration, this created tension between the British Crown and republican movements, which eventually led to the independence of Ireland.
